The Maji print is inspired by the bright batik print featuring cowrie shells. The batik style of textile production is an ancient technique, traces of it seen in the wrappings of Egyptian mummies. It is a wax-resistant dyeing technique. When the wax is removed, the original background color of the fabric emerges. This design features images and geometric shapes that hold special cultural significance, each telling a unique story. The design has brought eastern and western Africa together in the maji collection and is paying homage to West African technique with a print that features cowrie shells. Cowrie shells can be found on the beautiful shores of Tanzania. The print's name, "maji" means "water" in the Swahili language in Tanzania.
